The Color Contrast War Is Here — And It's Not Just a Web Problem

My vision has been changing these last few years, and it's changed how I look at almost everything with words on it. I've started noticing bad color contrast everywhere — not just on websites, which is where I spend most of my professional attention, but on streaming menus I have to squint at from across the room, pull-quotes in magazines printed in pale gray on white, billboards I can't actually read until I'm nearly underneath them. The color contrast war is here, and right now, contrast is losing.

It's not just websites anymore

Streaming and smart TV interfaces love a thin, light-gray font on a slightly-less-light background, styled for a mockup on a designer's monitor rather than a couch ten feet from the screen. Magazines and print layouts reach for pastel pull-quotes and delicate caption type that looks elegant on a lightbox and disappears under normal room lighting. Billboards and signage get designed on a laptop at a comfortable viewing distance, then get judged for real at highway speed, in direct sun, by someone who has about two seconds to read them. The medium changes; the mistake doesn't.

Even within web design, the worst offenders are sometimes the sites built specifically to impress other designers. A certain style of stylish portfolio and design-showcase site has become its own genre: an ultra-thin font, a pale gray on an even paler background, huge negative space, everything whispering instead of speaking. It photographs beautifully for a case-study screenshot and reads like a struggle in person. The irony is hard to miss — the people who should know better are often the ones setting the trend.

Same headline, same layout, same font family. The only difference is font weight and color contrast — and it's the difference between a message that lands and one that doesn't.

Why this is getting worse, not better

A few things are happening at once. More design work than ever is being done by people without formal design training — in-house marketers, small business owners building their own materials, anyone with a deadline and a design tool. That's not a knock on them; it's just more hands making visual decisions without necessarily knowing contrast is a decision at all. At the same time, AI tools are now doing a huge share of graphic and layout generation, and those tools are optimized to produce something that looks striking, on-trend, and fast — not something a contrast checker has ever touched. Layer on top of that a design culture that's currently in love with muted palettes, thin weights, and pastel-on-white everything, and you get bad contrast showing up more often, in more places, made by more people who never had a reason to think about it.

What actually gets lost when contrast fails

People don't usually complain when they can't read something — they just stop trying. They lose interest, or they never fully understood the message in the first place, and they move on without ever telling you why. That's the real cost: not a compliance checkbox missed, but a message that quietly never landed. Aging eyes are a huge and growing part of that lost audience, and I'm one of them now, but it's not only an aging-vision issue — it's low vision, color-vision deficiency, glare, a cheap TV panel, a phone screen at full brightness outdoors. A message that only works under ideal viewing conditions is a message that's failing most of the people it was supposed to reach.

A personal note

I've spent my career caring about accessibility professionally, but this one's landed differently the last couple of years. Watching my own eyes change has made me a lot less patient with "it looks great in the mockup" as a finished argument. If I can't read it comfortably anymore, I promise you I'm not the only one having that experience quietly and just not mentioning it.

Contrast isn't a web-only discipline, and it isn't only a professional designer's job to get right — it's a basic check anyone making anything with text on it can run in seconds, whether that's a website, a flyer, a slide deck, or an AI-generated graphic before it ships.
